Brand Activation Examples in India: Real Campaigns
Planning this for your company in Pune or anywhere in India? WhatsApp RareAct or send us your brief.
The brand activation examples in India worth studying all give people something to do with the brand, rather than something to look at. Think of Coca-Cola's Small World Machines linking India and Pakistan, Lifebuoy stamping handwashing reminders on rotis at the Kumbh Mela, Volkswagen's talking newspaper, Google's Internet Saathi bicycles, and newer work like Coke Studio Bharat LIVE and Swiggy Scenes' "Un-Coop Yourself". Each one turned the brand idea into a real moment of behaviour. Every campaign below is publicly documented and linked to its source. None of them is RareAct's work.
What are the best brand activation examples in India?
We picked these eleven because the brand, its agency or a credible publication has documented them, and because each one teaches something different. Where we quote results, they're as reported by the cited source, which is often the agency or the brand itself. Treat them as indicative, not independently audited. If the term is new to you, start with what is brand activation.
1. Coca-Cola Small World Machines: a vending machine as a bridge
In March 2013, Coca-Cola and Leo Burnett placed two connected vending machines, one in India and one in Pakistan. Each had a live video screen and a touch panel, and people on both sides had to complete a small task together (waving, touching hands, drawing a peace sign) to get a Coke. Communication Arts reports the project took eighteen months to develop and ended in a three-day live event, with over 10,000 attendees and over 700 cross-border connections.
Why it worked: the Coke was the reward for an interaction that carried the brand's idea of shared happiness. The product wasn't the point of the moment. It was the payoff.
2. Lifebuoy Roti Reminder at the Kumbh Mela
At the 2013 Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, Lifebuoy and its activation partner OgilvyAction used a heat stamp to print "Did you wash your hands with Lifebuoy?" on rotis served at the site. Ads of the World records 2.5 million rotis stamped, at an event where 100 million visitors were expected.
This is our favourite on the list, mainly for the timing. The message reached people at the exact moment the behaviour mattered, right before they ate.
3. Volkswagen Vento's talking newspaper
To launch the Vento sedan in September 2010, Volkswagen ran a special section in The Times of India and The Hindu with a light-sensitive chip that started talking when readers opened the page. ABC News reported that some startled readers called the police, while the 2.2 million copies became collector's items.
The surprise worked because it arrived inside a medium people trusted and picked up every morning. The lesson cuts both ways, though. If you're putting something unfamiliar in front of the public, plan for how they might misread it.
4. Tata Tea Jaago Re: a call to action, not only an ad
Tata Tea's Jaago Re is a cause-marketing platform that began around the 2009 general elections with a website that helped young Indians register to vote. Later phases took on bribery and gender stereotypes, including a public pledge by Shah Rukh Khan to credit his female co-stars first.
It gave people something concrete to do, whether registering or pledging, and that action fit the brand's "wake up" positioning closely.
5. Google Internet Saathi: trusted locals on bicycles
Google partnered with Tata Trusts to train rural women as Internet Saathis, who cycled between villages with smartphones and tablets and taught other women to use the internet. Stanford Social Innovation Review describes how the work was split: Google provided devices and data, Tata Trusts the bicycles and trainers. A World Bank case study from 2020 reports more than 81,500 Saathis reaching over 30 million women across 290,000 villages.
The activation ran through people the audience already trusted, and it removed a real barrier to using the product. That second part is the one brands tend to overlook.
6. Samsung Opera House, Bengaluru: a heritage building as an experience
In 2018 Samsung opened what it called the world's largest mobile experience centre in the restored Opera House on Brigade Road. The 33,000 sq ft space includes live cooking demonstrations with Samsung ovens, accessory customisation and laser engraving, and a service centre.
Here the activation is permanent. Trying products is the whole reason to walk in, and the building was already one people in Bengaluru knew.
7. Cadbury Celebrations #NotJustACadburyAd
During the pandemic, Ogilvy and Wavemaker helped Cadbury Celebrations lend its advertising to small shops. In 2021, WPP reports, machine learning produced hyper-personalised ads in which Shah Rukh Khan appeared to promote more than 2,000 local stores, served to people near those stores. Ogilvy lists a Cannes Lions Titanium among the work's honours.
The brand activated its retail channel by sharing its biggest asset, its ambassador, with the shopkeepers who sell its chocolate. That's a generous idea, and generosity tends to get remembered.
8. Bacardi NH7 Weekender: a festival property that started in Pune
The NH7 Weekender began as a three-day multi-genre music festival at Koregaon Park in Pune in 2010 and has since grown to several cities. As title sponsor, Bacardi has its name on the festival and on the main stage, the Bacardi Arena.
The value here comes from staying put. Bacardi built its association with a culture its audience loved over many editions, not a single weekend.
9. TVS MotoSoul: riding, not watching
TVS Motor's MotoSoul festival in Goa reached its fifth edition in December 2025. The programme is built around participation: dirt-track and obstacle races, a slow race, motocross challenges, a stunt competition where Apache riders compete to join a TVS-sponsored team, gaming simulators and headline concerts.
Every format puts the motorcycles to work and lets owners take part instead of standing at a barricade. For a similar community festival, look at Royal Enfield in our experiential marketing examples in India.
10. Coke Studio Bharat LIVE: from screen to stage
In January 2026 Coca-Cola took its Coke Studio Bharat music platform offline for the first time, with live editions in Delhi and Guwahati. The brand describes an experience combining music, food and sports, with unreleased song previews and fans joining artists on stage.
It turned a content property the brand already owned into a shared live moment, and gave fans something a screen can't.
11. Swiggy Scenes "Un-Coop Yourself"
For New Year's Eve 2025, Swiggy Scenes placed a life-sized wooden "coop" in a public space, recreating a lonely night on the couch. Pressing a buzzer outside turned it into a party with music, lights and a disco ball, and the activation pointed people to events listed on the Swiggy Scenes app.
It acted out the exact problem the product solves, then gave people a clear next step. Simple, and easy to copy badly.
What made these brand activation examples in India work?
The budgets and categories are very different, but the same patterns keep showing up.
Each one asked people to do something: wave across a border, register to vote, press a buzzer, race a bike. They also caught people at the right moment. Lifebuoy reached people just before they ate, and Swiggy Scenes reached them while they were planning New Year's Eve.
Most of them answered a real need or desire, like internet access for rural women, support for small shops or simply a reason to leave the house. The product sat inside the experience, too; Samsung, TVS and Coca-Cola all made using or receiving the product part of the story. And several of them travelled far beyond the people who were physically there, because they gave others a story worth retelling.
What lessons can you apply to your own brand activation?
- Start from behaviour. Decide what you want people to do, then design the moment that makes doing it feel natural.
- Pick the context before the creative. Campuses, festivals, malls, offices and pilgrim sites each need a different format, and an idea that works in a mall can die on a campus.
- Use messengers people already trust. Local people, communities and partners often carry more weight than the brand does on its own.
- Plan for surprises. Volkswagen's talking newspaper shows how easily an unfamiliar experience can be misread.
- Measure what people did. Count interactions, sign-ups and trials, and watch how people behaved. Footfall alone tells you very little.

FAQs
What is a good example of brand activation in India?
Lifebuoy's Roti Reminder at the 2013 Kumbh Mela is one of the most cited: rotis were heat-stamped with a handwashing reminder just before people ate. Coca-Cola's Small World Machines, which linked vending machines in India and Pakistan, is another good one.
What is the difference between brand activation and advertising?
Advertising tells people about a brand. Brand activation gets them to interact with it, by trying, playing, joining or acting. Many campaigns use both, with an activation creating a story that advertising then spreads.
Which Indian brands are known for brand activations?
Coca-Cola, Lifebuoy, Volkswagen, Tata Tea, Google, Samsung, Cadbury, TVS Motor and Swiggy all have documented examples. Bacardi has built a long-term association through its NH7 Weekender title sponsorship.
Do brand activations work for B2B companies?
Yes. The same principles hold: design an action, pick the right moment and use messengers people trust. In B2B, activations often look like launches, partner meets, conference experiences or skill-led workshops.
Are any of these campaigns RareAct's work?
No. Every example in this guide is a publicly documented campaign by another brand and agency, linked to its source. We've included them to show what makes activations work.
